News - Anger over adult education cuts
Kent’s adult education service has come under fire for scrapping some services for people with learning difficulties.
Managers said courses must be cut due to funding problems, but insist new ones will be added at a later date.
But Kathleen Vant, from Maidstone, said her 32-year-old daughter, who has a reading age of a school beginner, will be left with no education.
She said her daughter’s choices are already limited and the cuts will make her life even more difficult.
‘Very upset’
Mrs Vant said she was “very upset” when she was told that both her daughter’s computer and art courses would be scrapped.
“If they are going to start new courses later on then there should be something in the interim otherwise they are discriminating against this section of the community,” she added.
She also criticised the service for not letting the families know about the cuts sooner.
“None of us have been told officially. I found out from a sheet of paper to a tutor that was lying in the common room.”
But head of Kent Adult Education, Des Crilley, insisted the service for people with learning difficulties needed refreshing.
“It is our duty to secure the facility for the future and if we don’t change, we will not be attracting funding which is desperately needed for this area for the future.”
